Responsible Thesis-Writing Process

The University of Vaasa's guidelines for research ethics and research data management.

Ethics and Responsibility Related to Publishing

General Information

Authors must ensure the authenticity of their work. If the authors have used texts or parts of other works authored by others, these must be properly cited. This also applies to the reuse of your own work. Clearly distinguish between your writing and the writing of others.

Familiarise yourself with the writing and referencing guidelines of the publisher or educational institution ahead of the writing process and utilise them throughout it.

Research sponsors and commercial and political liabilities must be disclosed in connection with the publication of the results.

As the author, you are responsible for having obtained the right to use third-party materials, including images or individual articles of a doctoral thesis. To avoid delays, permission should be ensured prior to sending the work to the publisher. Attach a written confirmation from the copyright holder to your manuscript.

Theses

Bachelor’s theses, Master’s theses and Licentiate theses

  • Copyright remains with the author.
  • A thesis always constitutes a public document. This also applies to Bachelor’s theses in hidden collections and Master’s theses in collections with restricted access.

Dissertations

  • Doctoral theses are usually published in a University of Vaasa publication series and, as the author, you enter into a publication agreement with the university.
  • More information is available in Messi and in the Publishing in the university’s own series guide.
