The use of artificial intelligence

The teacher may deny the use of AI in a course, assignment or exam. Each institution of higher education has its own policies, which may differ from these guidelines.

Pay attention to the following when you are using AI tools:

  • Responsibility: The author is always responsible for their output.
  • Knowledge: Artificial Intelligence Systems are only programs and have limitations, and artificial intelligence does not have competence or understanding of the content. Be aware of these limitations, so that you can assess the suitability of the use of artificial intelligence in different situations.
  • Ethical principles: Observe general ethical principles, such as fairness, equal treatment and respect for other students and teachers.

Students at universities are encouraged to use artificial intelligence in order to develop their own working life skills.

  • Adopt: Use artificial intelligence skillfully as an assistant and support in learning.
  • Provide feedback: Discuss and give feedback on the success of AI use to the teacher.
  • Participate in the discussion and share information: You are part of the university community. Discuss the ethical use of artificial intelligence and participate in initiatives of school communities and organizations to promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
  • Report: Notify quickly on errors and problems related to the use of artificial intelligence in teaching.

Input

Personal or confidential material should not be used as input for artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence uses inputs for learning, so all the text you give to it, is used for this purpose and may thus end up being used by outsiders.

Licensed materials, e.g. scientific articles, should not be entered into any language models or other artificial intelligence tools either. Articles with CC licenses are no exception to this rule.

Output

Is it safe to use ChatGPT for your task by Aleksandfr Tiulkanov. Flowchart, text description below.

Does the correctness of the result matter? If the answer is no, then you can use AI without any worries.

If the answer is yes, consider whether you have the expertise to verify the result. If you do not have sufficient skills, you cannot use AI.

If the answer is yes, the next step is to consider whether you are ready to take full moral and legal responsibility for the outcome. If not, don't use AI, but if the answer is yes, you can use AI as long as you check the accuracy of every word and sentence you enter and use common sense.

Terms

A software that imitates the human way of learning and making decisions. Works on the basis of algorithms built by humans but can be taught to learn and develop their performance independently.

A system based on machine learning or algorithms. AI (artificial intelligence) model is a program that is used as the building blocks of an AI system.

A list of instructions on how to perform a task or process. For example, a food recipe is an algorithm that gives instructions on how to prepare a dish.

Data that is too complex and large to be dealt and analyzed with traditional data-processing techniques.

A form of artificial intelligence (AI) where the machine learns new things more or less independently by using data.

The processed or unprocessed data used in machine learning.

A method of AI (artificial intelligence) machine learning where neural networks composed of multiple levels are utilized. In deep learning, AI learns to not only recognize things but also interpret context and possibly complete missing information.

Computational models that aim to imitate the function of the neural circuits in the human brain. They can be used to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

The machine's ability to perform tasks in natural language. The machine is made to understand written text or spoken language. Examples include chatbots, Siri, Google assistant, GPT-3 and the automated subject indexing tool, Annif, used in Osuva and Theseus.
